This guide applies exclusively during the early Certificate, Please objective. Herbert moves to different positions in later story chapters.

Herbert is stationed at the Crossroads directly east of your house.[1] Carry Burial Certificate I in your inventory, speak with him, and select "Show the burial certificate".[2][3] He inspects it without taking it, and the guards clear the southern path into the village.[4][5]

  • 1 Inventory Check: Ensure Burial Certificate I is in your carried backpack before setting out.
  • 2 Travel East: Walk straight east along the dirt road from your house to the four-way Crossroads junction.
  • 3 Dialogue: Speak with Herbert and choose "Show the burial certificate" to open the village gate.

Step-by-Step Walkthrough

1. Verify Burial Certificate in Inventory

Before heading out, open your inventory. You must carry Burial Certificate I, which Gerry or the initial burial sequence granted after interring your first corpse.[2] Important: The game checks for possession in your inventory slots—do not leave the certificate inside home storage chests.

2. Follow the Road East to the Crossroads

  1. Exit your house and head straight east along the main roadway.[6]
  2. Keep following the path until it broadens into a distinct four-way intersection known as the Crossroads.[1]
  3. You will see Guard Captain Herbert standing near the road barrier blocking the path leading south toward the village.[5]

3. Talk to Herbert and Select the Prompt

  1. Interact with Herbert to initiate the conversation.[1]
  2. From the dialogue tree, select: "Show the burial certificate".[3]

4. Retain Document and Enter the Village

  1. Herbert reviews the document and acknowledges your authorization.[4]
  2. You keep the certificate: Herbert does not consume, confiscate, or sell your certificate; it remains safely in your inventory.[4]
  3. Your quest log updates with: "I brought a Burial Certificate."[7]
  4. The sentries step aside, permanently opening the road south into the village.[5]

  • ✕ Herbert Not at Crossroads: Verify your active quest. Herbert is only at the Crossroads during Certificate, Please. Later in the story, he shifts locations (such as the Mountain Fort or Town outskirts).
  • ✕ "Show the burial certificate" Missing: You do not have Burial Certificate I in your active backpack. Retrieve it from your home trunk.
  • ✕ Guards Still Blocking: Speak with Herbert again and ensure the dialogue prompt was clicked. The journal must register *"I brought a Burial Certificate."*
