How to Get Science in Graveyard Keeper 2 (Science Kits and the Study Table)

Quick answer

Science comes from Science Kits. Craft them at the Writing Desk (1 Alchemy Flask + 5 Clean Paper + 1 Ink), then decompose them at the Study Table in the tower lab. Each Science Kit I is worth 30 Science.[1][2] You then spend Science at the same table to study items, which pays out tech points.[1]

Before you start

  • Study Table: it is in the Alchemy Lab in the tower next to your house, which opens through the Plague Doctor's first request.[1][2]
  • Writing Desk: it is built in the writing room under your house after you unlock Writing Basic. See the Writing Desk guide.[3]

Prima Games calls the mastery "Theology"; the Wikily database calls the same track "Book writing".[2][4]

Cost per kit, worked out: one Science Kit I needs 5 Clean Paper, and each Clean Paper is made from 1 Leather Scroll, so every kit consumes 5 Leather Scrolls but only 1 Ink. Plan your supply of corpse skin before you worry about ink. Ash for the ink comes from cremation, which gives 5 Ash per corpse in Crematorium I (see where to burn bodies).[5]

Step by step

  1. Unlock the tower lab via the Plague Doctor.[1]
  2. Build the Writing Desk and make Leather Scrolls, then Clean Paper.[2][4]
  3. Make Ink from Ash, Water and Melted Fat.[2]
  4. Fire an Alchemy Flask I at the Furnace.[2]
  5. Craft the Science Kit at the Writing Desk.[2]
  6. Take it to the Study Table and choose to decompose it for Science.[1]
  7. Select an item on the Study Table to study it with that Science. Hovering an item shows which tech point colours it gives.[1]

Studying also reveals an item's compounds (runes), which is what lets you use it in alchemy later.[1][2] Pick study targets by the colour you need next: for example Zombie Mining costs 60 red and 10 blue, and Church Music I costs 50 red and 20 blue.[10][11]

Common problems

  • No Study Table: the tower lab is still locked; finish the Plague Doctor's first request.[1]
  • Science Kit missing from the Writing Desk list: you are missing a component or the book-writing mastery for its parts.[2]
  • Science is at zero after studying: each study spends Science; decompose another kit.[1]
