Quick answer
Fuel is not an item you carry. Build a Firewood Shed (10 Sticks + 2 Bronze Nails), chop Firewood at the Chopping Spot, and load it into the shed: 2 Firewood adds 20 Fuel.[1][2] Furnaces, kilns and ovens in the same area then draw from that shed. You need separate sheds for indoor and outdoor equipment.[1][3]
Firewood Shed tiers
| Tier | Build cost | Technology | Fuel per load |
|---|---|---|---|
| Firewood Shed I | 10 Stick, 2 Bronze Nails | Bronze Melting (10 red, after Bronze Works); unlocks with Furnace I | 2 Firewood → 20 Fuel |
| Firewood Shed II | 20 Stick, 6 Bronze Nails, 2 Bronze Detail | After Bronze Forge (20 red, 5 green) | 2 Firewood → 20 Fuel |
Data from the Fextralife wiki.[2] Both tiers load at the same ratio.[2] Shed I holds up to 100 Fuel at a time, so top it up before a long smelting run.[3]
Step by step
- Collect Sticks by chopping trees and clearing yard plants, and Bronze Nails from broken barrels and trash piles (or make 6 from Bronze Scrap at the Wooden Anvil after Bronze Works).[1]
- Build the shed from the blueprint desk. The first one is on the wall to the left of your bed for the house; there are also blueprint desks for the yard, Alchemy Lab and Vineyard Basement.[1][2]
- Make Firewood at the Chopping Spot: 1 short log, or 20 sticks, gives 10 Firewood.[1]
- Load the shed with its Add wood recipe: every 2 Firewood becomes 20 Fuel.[1][3]
- Craft. Stations in that section now pull fuel automatically.
How far does a log go?
These numbers come straight from the recipes above:
| You chop | Firewood | Fuel once loaded | Enough for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 short log | 10 | 100 (one full Shed I) | 3 iron smelts at 30 Fuel each, with 10 left over[4] |
| 20 sticks | 10 | 100 | 5 Melted Fat batches (20 Fuel each)[5] |
"20 Fuel" in a recipe means 20 fuel units, which is 2 Firewood, not 20 pieces of firewood.[1][3]
Where you need a shed
- House: for the oven.[1]
- Yard: for the Furnace and Kiln.[1]
- Alchemy Lab and Vineyard Basement: they have their own shed blueprints for their stations.[2]
A shed only feeds the stations in its own area, so one outdoor shed will not power your indoor oven.[1][3]
Can zombies handle fuel?
Only partly. Wikily's station data says no zombie worker can be assigned to Firewood Shed I, so loading the shed stays a manual job.[3] What zombies can do is gather: the Wikily zombie job list includes a Lumberjack Stand (the zombie needs an axe), which keeps wood coming in.[6] You need zombies first; see the Resurrection Table guide, and keep an eye on the zombie limit.
Common problems
- "Not enough fuel" with a full shed next door: the shed is in a different section (house vs. yard).[1]
- Firewood in inventory but fuel still 0: Firewood must be loaded into the shed; the station cannot use it directly.[2]
