Quick answer
Faith comes from holding a sermon in the Church on Wrath day, the one day of the six-day week when Mass can be given.[1][2] How much you get depends on attendance, and attendance is the lower of your Church quality and your available Likes, so raising only one of them stops working quickly.[3] A good prayer, the Priest perk and staying under the zombie limit push it higher.[1][4]
Unlock sermons first
- Finish the early Town favours. Game Rant's route: deliver Wooden Planks and Bronze Details to Jack for the boat, and make clay plates for the twins so they will row it.[1]
- Meet the Nun in the Village Tavern after the ship leaves. This starts Holy Moly!.[1][3]
- Raise Church quality to 10 and talk to the Nun at the Church to finish the preparation stage.[3]
- Give your first sermon. That completes Holy Moly! and unlocks Wrath day on the calendar.[3][2]
The attendance rule
| If... | Then... | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Church quality < Likes | Quality is the cap | Benches, candles, shrines, incense, choir |
| Likes < Church quality | Likes are the cap | Town jobs, orders, Green Scrolls |
| Both are high | Prayer and perks decide the rest | Better prayer, Priest perk |
The "lower of the two" rule is from the Fextralife wiki.[3] Game Rant lists the church upgrades (interior benches for 6 spots using Wooden Planks and Bronze Nails, then Theology upgrades like shrines, candles and incense burners) and the ways to earn Likes/gratitude (bury bodies, help villagers, sell to traders).[1]
Raising Church quality
- Benches first: there are 6 bench spaces, and they only need Wooden Planks and Bronze Nails.[1]
- Theology tech: candles and other lighting (Church Lighting I also unlocks the Formulation Bench).[1][5]
- Choir: up to 5 zombies in the gallery, 1 to 7 quality each. See the Choir guide.[6]
Raising Likes
- Town orders from Jack's warehouse board, for example Supply: Iron gives +20 Likes on its first order.[7] See Supply: Iron.
- Green Scrolls handed to Linda raise your maximum Likes. See Green Scrolls.[8]
What cuts your Faith
- Too many zombies. Owning more zombies than your limit gives the Excessive zombies debuff, which reduces what every prayer pays.[4] One Steam player reported 8 Faith instead of their usual 36 while it was active.[9] See zombie limit and the PR Machine.
- Missing the day. Only one sermon per week, on Wrath day.[2]
What Faith is spent on
| Use | Faith |
|---|---|
| Bronze / Golden / Steel Zombie Collar | 3 / 5 / 10 each[4] |
| Charging one Hypno-device | 1[10] |
| Herbert's "Fighting Spirit Required" hand-in | 3[3] |
| Studying some items (e.g. Flax 2, Beeswax 5) | varies[11][12] |
| Inspirations and research | varies[1] |
Because collars eat Faith fast, a steady weekly sermon is what lets you keep raising zombies.
